Global temperatures: On track to reach record levels in the next 5 years

Scientists are warning that the next five years could see the highest temperatures ever recorded, with serious consequences for the global climate, human health and natural ecosystems. According to a new report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there is an 80% chance of a new annual temperature record by 2029, according to the Guardian.

This bleak outlook comes with an even more worrying warning: for the first time, climate models show that, although small, there is now a real chance (about 1%) that the planet's temperature will rise by 2°C before 2030 compared to pre-industrial times.

The report notes that the probability of exceeding the 1.5°C limit in at least one of the next five years is now 86%, up from just 40% in 2020.

This indicates the acceleration of the climate crisis. Furthermore, it is estimated that the average temperature increase for the five-year period 2025-2029 has a 70% chance of exceeding 1.5°C.

The probability of a 2°C temperature increase within a decade, although currently limited to 1%, is now considered "shocking" by experts, as such a thing was previously considered impossible.

The effects of climate change are not uniform across the globe.

According to predictions, Arctic winters will warm 3.5 times faster than the global average, due to melting sea ice and reduced surface reflectivity.

The result is the absorption of more solar energy and further acceleration of warming./CNA
