"May the thieves who steal from us eat their heads off"/ Farmer

The lack of a market and the low selling price of apples has forced farmers in the village of Zvirinë in Devoll to cut down their trees.

In an interview, farmer Skënder Nurka said that there is no benefit to dealing with this trade anymore. The farmer said that there is still production and that the apples are of good quality.

The farmer sees leaving as the only solution to this situation and blames the country's leadership structures for this.

" It's ten years old, small. They don't grow, there's no price. Why keep them? There's no profit, pesticides, fertilizers are a disaster. The apples don't grow. Should I cut them off, should I cut off their heads? I don't have a son, I don't have a daughter, I'm 65 years old, I retired. The production has stopped, I still have apples to sell. Quality apples, all of Albania is like that. It makes your brain tear, just looking at the onion once. I also have another garden, until I leave and I'm nowhere to be found. What are you going to do here? Live here. 200 thousand lek pension, maximum.

I paid the insurance now for 2016, 70 thousand lek in interest. It breaks your heart, we were born and raised with this. I graduated as an agronomist in '79. I have been dealing with this my whole life, this is what I have been feeding myself, both the father and the son. The son fled to Italy 3 years ago. What is he doing here? What is our fault? We are also to blame for those thieves who rob us up there, they strip us alive so they can eat our heads off, " the farmer said./ CNA
