Cold Storm "Koral" Comes to the Mediterranean/ How Will It Affect the

The cold winter storm Koral is sweeping across much of the Eastern Mediterranean, bringing an unseasonably cold front and even moderate snowfall to regions unaccustomed to such extreme winter weather.

The storm began to affect Greece since Wednesday evening with cold and icy weather and is expected to last until early next week, bringing Arctic air masses that will result in varying amounts of snow, freezing temperatures and generally severe weather conditions in Greece, Israel and Cyprus.

As part of the 2024–25 European storm season, Storm Koral is the first major weather system to affect the Eastern Mediterranean in 2025. With falling temperatures, rare snowfall, and widespread outages, it serves as a reminder of how volatile winter weather can be, even in normally mild regions.

The Mediterranean island of Cyprus is not only expecting snow in its mountainous and semi-mountainous regions, but is also facing power shortages as temperatures plummet. Authorities have warned that Storm Coral could lead to ongoing outages, adding to the challenges posed by the severe weather conditions.

Turkey is also feeling the effects of Storm Coral, with Istanbul blanketed in snow since Wednesday. While snowfalls in Turkey's largest city are not unheard of, they remain a relatively rare occurrence, often requiring the perfect mix of Arctic air and moisture from the surrounding seas.

Meanwhile, in Israel, Jerusalem and the Hebron Hills are among the regions forecast to see significant snowfall starting Sunday, with elevations above 500–700 meters (1,640–2,297 feet) most likely to experience accumulations. This marks one of the most impactful winter storms to hit the country in recent years, bringing with it the potential for travel disruptions and school closures. /CNA
