The blood groups were discovered by the pathologist, hematologist and serologist from Vienna, Karl Landsteiner. His birthday, June 14, 1868, is commemorated every year on World Blood Donation Day.

Landsteiner discovered the so-called AB0 system of blood groups in 1900. For this discovery he received the "Nobel Prize in Psychology and Medicine" in 1930. His discovery was a cornerstone for medicine.

Blood type is inherited

In fact, everyone should know the blood group, because in the event of an accident, it is easier for nurses and doctors to organize the right blood for transfusion as quickly as possible, because not every blood group is suitable for everyone. But only a few people know what blood type they have.

Blood type is determined by genes, so it is hereditary. The so-called ABo (zero) system divides human blood into four different blood groups: A, B, AB, and 0. In cases of donation, the blood must have the same group for both the donor and the recipient. If the donated blood and the blood recipient do not match, then the blood can become blocked and have fatal consequences. Therefore it is vital that everyone knows their blood type.

World Blood Donation Day

World Blood Donation Day makes it clear how needed and wanted blood donors are. Because very few donate blood themselves. How important it is to donate blood, it becomes clear when someone needs a blood transfusion himself./ DW
