Extreme heat around the world / WHO gives 7 practical health tips

The World Health Organization has published practical advice for staying cool during extreme heat.

The guidance recommends staying out of the heat by avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, staying in the shade, and spending two to three hours each day in a cool place.

To keep homes cool, the WHO advises closing windows and covering them with curtains during the day when outside temperatures are higher than inside, as well as turning off as many electrical appliances as possible.

The guidance also warns that electric fans should only be used when temperatures are below 40 degrees Celsius, while at temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, fans will heat the body.

If you use air conditioning, the WHO recommends setting the thermostat to 27 degrees Celsius and turning on an electric fan, which will make the room feel 4 degrees Celsius cooler and can save up to 70% on cooling electricity bills.

To keep the body cool and hydrated, the WHO suggests wearing light and loose-fitting clothes, taking cool showers, moistening the skin with a damp cloth or spray, and drinking water regularly, at least one cup per hour and two to three liters per day.

The guidance also emphasizes regular screening of vulnerable people, especially those over 65 and those with heart, lung or kidney problems, disabilities or who live alone.

The WHO also warns people to never leave children or animals in parked vehicles, to avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak hours, and to never cover a baby's stroller with a dry cloth, which makes it hotter inside, but instead use a thin, damp cloth as needed./CNA
