Study finds blood type affects risk of early stroke

A study published in 2022 has found a significant link between blood type and the risk of stroke at an early age. According to the research, people with blood type A are more likely to suffer a stroke before the age of 60.

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Maryland and analyzed data from 48 genetic studies, which included about 17,000 patients who had suffered a stroke and nearly 600,000 other people who had not had such health problems.

The results showed that individuals with the A1 genetic variant had a 16 percent higher risk of stroke at a young age, compared to other blood types. Meanwhile, people with type O1 had a 12 percent lower risk.

According to vascular neurologist Steven Kittner, the number of strokes in young people is increasing and the consequences can be severe, including death or long-term disability.

However, researchers emphasize that the additional risk for people with blood type A remains relatively small and there is no reason for alarm or additional checks just because of blood type.

Experts suspect that the link may have to do with blood clotting factors, such as platelets and proteins that affect the formation of clots in blood vessels.

Another interesting finding of the study was that the influence of blood type A was not significant in people over 60 years old, suggesting that strokes at a young age may have different mechanisms than those that occur at an older age.

Researchers are calling for more studies in the future to better understand the link between blood types and the risk of cardiovascular disease./ CNA
