An existing drug could be repurposed to help treat panic attacks

A new study suggests that an existing drug, Minocycline, could be repurposed to help treat panic, offering hope to millions of patients worldwide.

Researchers from the State University of Sao Paulo (UNESP) discovered that this antibiotic, known for its anti-inflammatory effects, can reduce the intensity of panic attacks by acting on microglia, the brain's immune cells associated with stress and fear reactions.

The experiments were conducted on mice and 49 people with panic disorder. After 14 days of treatment, patients who received minocycline showed a significant reduction in symptoms, especially when attacks were provoked by exposure to carbon dioxide (CO2).

In the study, minocycline was compared to Clonazepam, one of the most commonly used medications for anxiety. Both treatments were effective, but minocycline works differently, reducing inflammation in the brain, rather than directly affecting nerve receptors.

Scientists believe this new approach could lead to safer treatments, with fewer side effects compared to current medications.

However, they emphasize that larger clinical studies are needed to fully confirm the effectiveness and safety of this treatment.

If the results are confirmed, minocycline could become an important alternative in the treatment of panic disorders, opening a new chapter in psychiatric medicine./ CNA
