Harvard study: Optimism plays role in reducing dementia risk

A new Harvard study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, shows that optimism may be linked to a lower risk of dementia. The findings add another reason to cultivate a more positive attitude.

The study followed more than 9,000 adults over the age of 70 for up to 14 years. The participants did not have dementia at the start of the study. The study's main results showed that people with higher levels of optimism had a roughly 15% lower risk of developing dementia. Also, the more optimistic someone was, the lower their risk. The results held true regardless of race, health status or levels of depression.

Dementia is a general term for a group of symptoms caused by brain diseases that cause a serious decline in mental function, memory, speech, and judgment. It is not a normal part of aging, but a progressive condition that affects daily life.

Dementia affects approximately 57 million people worldwide and there is still no definitive cure. Therefore, prevention is a key goal of the scientific community. The idea in this study that a psychological factor such as optimism can influence brain health is particularly important./CNA
