Study: Vitamin D and calcium do not improve bone health

A new scientific analysis has questioned the effectiveness of calcium and vitamin D supplements in improving bone health in the elderly.

According to reports published by ScienceDaily, an extensive review conducted by Canadian researchers analyzed 69 randomized controlled studies, with a total of 153,902 participants.

The results showed that calcium, vitamin D, or their combination offered little or no significant protection against fractures or falls in most older adults.

The study, published in the medical journal The BMJ, emphasizes that the findings apply mainly to people who are not at high risk for osteoporosis or fractures and do not include patients with specific bone disorders or those receiving medical treatments for osteoporosis.

The authors noted that, despite the widespread use of these supplements in medical practice, there is no strong evidence supporting their routine use for preventing fractures or falls.

Meanwhile, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls remain one of the leading causes of serious injuries in people over 65, contributing to the loss of independence and quality of life.

Researchers suggest that instead of routine supplements, older adults focus on proven methods such as balance exercises, resistance exercise, and personalized fall prevention programs tailored to medical risk assessment./ CNA
