Study: Daytime sleepiness may be a sign of high blood pressure

A new study conducted by Penn State College of Medicine has found that excessive daytime sleepiness may be an important indicator of high blood pressure, especially in people who have difficulty sleeping at night.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 1,700 adults who reported feeling sleepy during the day and underwent sleep tests overnight.

The results showed that participants with excessive sleepiness were 52 percent more likely to have hypertension and 74 percent more likely to develop it over time.

The risk was even higher in people who needed 30 minutes or more to fall asleep.

In this group, the likelihood of having high blood pressure doubled, while the risk of developing it in the future tripled.

According to the study's lead author, Alexandros Vgontzas, adults who experience excessive daytime sleepiness and prolonged sleep onset delay constitute a group at significantly higher risk for cardiovascular problems.

The authors emphasize that these findings suggest that doctors should consider factors other than sleep apnea when evaluating patients who complain of persistent daytime sleepiness.

The study was presented June 17 at a meeting organized by the Associated Professional Sleep Societies in Baltimore and was also published in Sleep./ CNA
