Heat also affects mental health/ Experts warn of increased anxiety and

Extreme temperatures not only harm the body, but can also cause mental health problems, increasing irritability, anxiety and even aggressive behavior. With heat waves increasingly affecting Europe, experts warn that their impact is not the same for everyone.

Clinical psychologist Susan Albers from the Cleveland Clinic told Euronews that studies show that on hotter days, cases of aggression, traffic anger, violence and emergency room visits for mental health problems increase.

According to her, high temperatures put the brain under stress, as it has to work harder to keep the body cool. This leaves less energy to control emotions and maintain composure. Experts point out that dehydration makes the situation worse. Even a slight lack of fluids can affect the areas of the brain that control attention, decision-making and emotions, causing confusion, anxiety and irritability.

To avoid these consequences, the World Health Organization recommends drinking at least 2–3 liters of water per day, as well as cooling the body with cool drinks or cold compresses on the neck, ankles and feet. Another problem during heat waves are tropical nights, when the temperature does not drop below 20 degrees Celsius. This prevents the body from recovering at night and affects the quality of sleep.

According to experts, lack of sleep makes people more emotionally sensitive, more impatient, and less able to cope with daily stress. People who suffer from mental health disorders are even more at risk. Research shows that high temperatures can worsen anxiety, depression, symptoms of schizophrenia, and increase the risk of suicidal behavior.

Experts also warn that some medications, including antidepressants, stimulants, antihistamines and blood pressure drugs, can make it harder for the body to regulate temperature or increase the risk of dehydration during hot days. /CNA
