It's probably not something you spend a lot of time thinking about, but you should know that saliva is vital to good health. AgroWeb.org invites you to read below to learn how saliva is good for the body!

What is saliva?

Saliva is 98% water. It contains small amounts of important substances, including mucus, proteins, minerals, electrolytes, antibacterial compounds and enzymes.

Saliva moistens the mouth, lubricates it as you chew and swallow food, and neutralizes harmful acids.

Saliva is produced by three major salivary glands and hundreds of smaller glands that surround the oral cavity.

The main salivary glands include the parotid (located inside the cheeks), sublingual (under the tongue) and submandibular (near the jawbone).

Small tubes called salivary ducts carry saliva from these glands to your mouth.

The glands are activated when you eat or even just smell food.

An average person produces 2-4 liters of saliva every day.

Why is it important?

Saliva is an important part of a healthy body. Research shows that it protects against gum disease, tooth decay and other oral infections.

As saliva moves around the mouth, it washes away tiny bits of food that feed the bacteria responsible for tooth decay.

Neutralizes acids in the mouth that destroy tooth enamel by removing acidic residues after eating. Calcium, phosphorus, fluoride and other minerals found in saliva repair the damaged enamel surfaces of teeth, keeping them healthy, strong and resistant to cavities.

Saliva also plays an important role in digestion! Thanks to an enzyme called amylase, it breaks down starch, maltose and dextrose into smaller molecules.

It also helps you swallow food, making it moist and soft so it can slide down your throat more easily./ AgroWeb.org
