The Commissioner for Enlargement of the European Union, Oliver Varhelyi, has appreciated the achievement of opening the first group-chapters of Albania with the European Union.

"In this month we opened the first group-chapter of expansion with Albania and this happened only this year. I am very proud to see our proposals and the Council has accepted and is working on them", he said.

During a media conference, Varhelyi emphasized the importance of discussing enlargement at the level of EU leaders, calling this a need for Europe.

He emphasized that corruption has no place in the European Union and reminded the candidate countries that membership depends on concrete efforts and achievements.

 "Today not only marks the last report of this commission, but it is very important to look back and see what we have achieved. It was this commission that worked non-stop to put the expansion on the agenda, not only to discuss, but also to work with it. Enlargement is one of the three main issues the leaders are discussing. It is in Europe's interest to expand. Corruption has no place in the EU family. We have doubled the number of EU candidate countries. We need to see real integration on the ground".
