The Minister of the Interior, Taulant Balla, during the presentation to the Health Commission on the amendments to the draft law "On drugs and psychotropic substances", where it is requested that nitrous oxide be included in this list, said that so far two letters have been sent on this issue.

He underlined that it is not being demanded that this substance be banned from entering Albania, but that their use as psychotropic substances be prohibited by law.

With these legal changes, the legal prohibition of nitrous oxide as a psychotropic substance is expected, a disturbing phenomenon that has recently spread especially among young people.  


"To reduce as much as possible the number of people who fall into the trap of using narcotic and psychotropic substances as a substance harmful to the health of those who use it and the health of our society. From the first moment when the Assembly entrusted me with the task as a minister, the State Police conveyed to me the concern of the use by young people of some psychotropic substances that were not included in the list available to us, among which nitrous oxide is considered harmful. It is confirmed by experts as a substance that brings worrying health problems, including those of a neurological nature. The police have seized suspected canisters filled with this gas to avoid the unauthorized use of this substance for profit. We have forwarded two letters, proposals for changes in the draft law on narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. It is this concern that we have, the inclusion of nitrogen and some other substances, we suggest to be included in the list of prohibited substances. It creates the possibility of abuse, and the increase of problematic cases, including businesses accessible to young people. I don't want their introduction into Albania to be banned, but their use as psychotropic substances to be banned by law", said Balla. /CNA
