"The work of SPAK should be carried out without political

The European Union Delegation today stressed the importance of the independence of the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) as a key element for strengthening the rule of law in Albania.

In a reaction, the EU Delegation emphasizes that SPAK's investigations and prosecutions should be conducted without political interference or undue pressure, thus supporting the independence of this institution in the fight against corruption and organized crime.

The delegation reiterates its support for SPAK and its independence, considering it a main pillar of the Justice Reform and Albania's European integration process.

The EU Delegation also emphasizes the importance of continuing the Justice Reform and strengthening independent institutions, seeking their compliance with European standards in both the justice and law enforcement sectors.

"We are closely following the latest developments regarding the investigation against the Mayor of Tirana. However, the EU does not comment on ongoing judicial proceedings," the statement released by the EU Delegation's press office said.

“The specific role of the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) and its independence in investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating complex corruption cases, without any attempt at political interference or undue pressure, are of essential importance for the consolidation of the rule of law in Albania.

The EU remains fully committed to supporting Albania's efforts in pursuing these reforms and to helping the country consolidate the efficiency, independence, accountability and professionalism of its institutions, as well as their compliance with EU standards, both in the law enforcement and justice sectors," the response states.

Regarding concerns about the security of SPAK premises and personnel, the EU Delegation informs that the EU Ambassador, Silvio Gonzato, raised this issue during a meeting with the Minister of Interior.

"The Ambassador has received guarantees that the protection of SPAK and the safety of its magistrates and staff will be guaranteed under all circumstances," the Delegation's statement reads./CNA
