Plans for Ukraine/ Zelensky may be preparing for presidential elections

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may be preparing for presidential elections in the summer, according to sources cited by the prestigious foreign media outlet 'The Economist'. After delaying calls for early elections for months, Zelensky now appears set to run for a second term in office, even as the war in Ukraine continues.

Election plans

Ukrainian authorities say Zelensky has urged his staff to call for elections at a recent meeting. The US has estimated a ceasefire will take place by the end of April, possibly on Easter Sunday, April 20, according to the report. Ukraine's parliament is expected to vote on May 5 on whether to extend martial law.

Under Ukrainian law, there must be at least 60 days of campaigning, so the election could be held as early as July, according to The Economist. But election officials have indicated that a full three-month campaign may be needed to rebuild voter lists in the midst of the war.

Global Pressure

The main pressure according to 'The Economist', global pressure, is responsible for changing Zelensky's decision to hold elections in wartime.

The uncertainty of time

Opposition leaders in Ukraine, such as Petro Poroshenko, head of the European Solidarity of Ukraine party, have speculated that the elections will be held sometime between August and October. Poroshenko said the campaign has already begun, referring to Zelensky's February sanctions against him, according to the report.

Elections could be held as early as July 2025, depending on the ceasefire and parliamentary decisions regarding martial law./CNA
