Voting begins in the Gjirokastra Region/ Delays in the Dropulli and Zagoria

The voting process in the Gjirokastra Region has generally started without major problems. Voting centers opened at the scheduled times, with the exception of some centers in the Dropull Municipality, where due to the delay of the commissioners and the malfunctioning of electronic identification devices, the process began with a delay of about 35 minutes.

In some areas of Dropulli and Zagoria, operators for biometric identification have not been contracted, due to a lack of staff and problems with the internet. In these centers, identification is being done manually, with the consensus of the commissions. Also, some minor technical situations have been noted, such as the confusion of the lids between the ballot box and the materials box.

In this election process, 198 polling centers were opened across the region in seven municipalities, down from 207 in 2021. According to official data, a total of 115,418 voters were registered, a decrease compared to 123,270 in the previous elections. Gjirokastra has the highest number of voters (40,510), while Libohova has the lowest (5,332).

The novelty of these elections is the participation of the diaspora. Around 8,500 emigrants from the region have registered to vote remotely through the PER platform, representing approximately 18% of the active electorate in 2021.

Although the physical presence of migrants through the Kakavija border crossing is lower than in past elections, their involvement could significantly impact the results in a district with demographic shrinkage and historically low turnout./CNA
