Teliti: The opposition demands the election of a new mayor for the Municipality

The Deputy Chairman of the Tirana Municipal Council, Dorian Teliti, said today that opposition councilors have requested that, upon the end of Veliaj's three-month absence from office, a session be convened to discuss the fate of the mayor and then proceed to a voting process.

Invited to a television space on 'Syri TV', Teliti stated that the Municipality of Tirana has been led for five months by a person who has not gone through the citizens' vote to gain their trust.

Teliti raised accusations that in these 5 months, many changes have occurred within the institution, without receiving a mandate from the public.

"Today, the Municipality of Tirana has been led for five months by a person who has not gone through the vote of the citizens to gain their trust.
Despite our objections to the 2023 elections, specifically the elections of May 14, where it is proven that the 5D gang made the law and received the votes to give Veliaj a third mandate, Veliaj, despite this discourse and the contested situation, was finally declared mayor of Tirana.

De jure, the votes were bought and he did not deserve a third term, but de jure, he emerged as mayor.

Meanwhile, the lady in question, Anduela Ristani, deputy mayor of Tirana, is running the municipality without being voted in by the citizens of Tirana. She has changed everything from within - the staff, teams and structures - without receiving a mandate from the public.

Albanian legislation clearly states: if the mayor is absent for more than 3 months, there is the right to dismiss him from office, by proposing a request for dismissal to the Council of Ministers.

We, as opposition councilors, have requested that upon the end of the three-month period of Mr. Veliaj's absence from office, the Municipal Council convene in a session to discuss the fate of the mayor and then proceed to a voting process.
So that we and the citizens of Tirana know, even if they do not want to dismiss Erion Veliaj, at least the citizens know that this is the official position of the Socialist Party, not to hide behind various pretexts.

It is not possible that, after five months, Tirana will be managed by a person who was not mandated to lead it.

The majority's stance was absurd. We were told, verbally and figuratively, that the Municipal Council does not have the right to summon the mayor, hold him accountable, and proceed to a vote. Meanwhile, Albanian legislation clearly states that the representative authority of the Municipality of Tirana is the Municipal Council and not its mayor.

Our duty is to address the issue and no one can stop our speech and right to speak.

Regarding that mill and these major mistakes that occur in the management of Tirana, especially in the illegality of the election and exercise of public office, I repeat: this mayor is unelected.

"Mrs. Ristani, the acting mayor of Tirana, should have come and, following the denunciations made on the Piranjat show, held a public discussion on how the Municipality's assets are being used.
Who gave the orders for the use of cars by other people? How were the assets distributed? Because, as the investigation shows, we have cases where individuals use two or three cars for family reasons," said Teliti./CNA
