Media: Organized crime in Albania, a dangerous alliance with institutions

MP and leader of the Republican Party, Fatmir Mediu, stated today that organized crime is dangerously linked to the country's weak institutions.

In a speech given at the OSCE meeting in Rome, Mediu said that this addiction to crime and drugs poses a danger not only for Albania, but also for Europe.

According to Mediu, criminal organizations penetrate the legal economy through money laundering and gradually deregulate free markets and democratic institutions.

"Today, organized crime no longer behaves just like the traditional mafia. They operate like multinational corporations, with logistical networks, financial structures, cyber capabilities, corruption channels and, above all, political influence."

The danger to Europe, including my country, is not just drug addiction. The real danger is infiltration.

Drug trafficking generates large amounts of illicit capital, which is reinvested through money laundering, construction, real estate, tourism, energy and infrastructure, gambling, influence over the media, election interference, and even in strategic sectors related to technology and ports.

Through money laundering, criminal organizations penetrate the legal economy and gradually disrupt free markets and democratic institutions.

And when dirty money enters politics, democracy itself is weakened, corrupted, and turned against its citizens.

Criminal groups, through financial influence and corrupt officials, manipulate public procurement, intimidate institutions, and create dependence between organized crime and political power.

"In some countries, including my own country, Albania, we are witnessing a dangerous fusion between organized crime, corruption, weak institutions and foreign influences," Mediu said. /CNA
