Municipal Council meets/ Erion Veliaj's dismissal demanded

The next meeting of the Municipal Council was held today.

Opposition councilors have requested that the dismissal of Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj be included on the agenda at today's meeting.

The request comes after Veliaj has been absent from duty for more than three months.

This request by the opposition advisors was opposed by Socialist Party advisors.

With the majority votes, it was not accepted to put the dismissal of the arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, on the agenda.

Since February 10, Erion Veliaj has been behind bars for a series of serious charges.

Initially, he was charged with the criminal offenses of passive and active corruption, as well as laundering the proceeds of crime.

Further, the charges of "Bringing prohibited items into detention cells", "Refusal to declare, failure to declare, concealment or false declaration of assets, private interests of elected persons and public servants or of any other person who has a legal obligation to declare" were added.

A day earlier, the Appeal Court of Kosovo upheld the security measure of imprisonment for Veliaj, who offered financial guarantees for his release, which was rejected by the court.

The arrested mayor of Tirana, who is being held in Durrës prison, faces 12 charges for 4 criminal offenses, as we highlighted above, for "Active and passive corruption of local elected officials", "Laundering the proceeds of crime", "Bringing prohibited items into detention cells", "Refusal to declare, failure to declare, concealment or false declaration of assets, private interests of elected officials and public servants or of any other person who has a legal obligation to declare"./ CNA
