Toxic waste/ PD request for urgent interpellation with Rama

The Parliamentary Group of the Democratic Party has made a request for an urgent interpellation with Prime Minister Rama regarding the toxic waste that was sent to Thailand and China from the Port of Durrës.

The request states that the repeated cases of export of toxic waste raise serious doubts that Albania is involved in an illegal international trade in hazardous waste.

Notification:

The DP Parliamentary Group, through the Chairman of the Gazment Bardhi Group, has requested an urgent interpellation with Prime Minister Edi Rama regarding the facts made public about the illegal transportation of hazardous waste to China and Thailand.

The request states that the repeated cases of export of toxic waste raise serious doubts that Albania is involved in an illegal international trade in hazardous waste. This shows that we are not dealing with an isolated event, but with a genuine criminal activity, which includes responsibility for illegal actions or inactions of some state authorities under the jurisdiction of the Council of Ministers, as well as a lack of criminal negligence in the supervision of the illegal activity of some private commercial entities, identified so far the companies "Kurum International" sh.a. and "Sokolaj" sh.pk.

"For this reason, only for the two identified loads, it results that a minimum amount of about 1600 tons of toxic, untreated and unprocessed waste will be returned to Albania, which risks threatening the lives and health of citizens and, without a doubt, national security. " - it is stated in the request submitted by the DP parliamentary group.

Also, in the request it is emphasized that from the data so far there is a reasonable suspicion that the public interest has been violated, because:

· The company "Kurum International" sh.a. has violated the law on the way of processing the hazardous waste it produces, while the company "Sokolaj" sh.pk has violated the law regarding the transportation of toxic hazardous waste.

· The responsible authorities have violated the law by not acting against these private companies for processing or transporting toxic waste, as well as by allowing their export outside the territory in violation of the country's laws and international conventions.

· On the other hand, the Government and the responsible authorities have been silent for 3 weeks and do not act by not making any transparency on this issue, while the scandal has reached national and international proportions.

"It is necessary immediately and without any delay that the Albanian Government informs the Parliament of Albania, and through it the public opinion, what it is about, to whom the hazardous waste belongs, how it was created or arrived in Albania, how it was treated, what actions , controls or supervisory acts have been undertaken by the institutions, how they were allowed to be exported without the relevant permits from the Port of Durres, who allowed them to enter and leave the territory of the Republic of Albania, from and through the Port of Durres, etc. In this case the lack of transparency on the part of the Government adds even more uncertainty to the lives of Albanian citizens and, above all, suspicions of a state-licensed criminal activity that endangers the national security of a NATO member country./CNA
