Left out of parliament/ Alimehmeti: This system must be abolished, the
Ilir Alimehmeti

The DP candidate on the open list for Tirana, Ilir Alimehmeti, although one of the most voted in the May 11 elections, remained outside of parliament.

After these elections and the results, Alimehmeti broke his silence by stating that the biggest problem the system had was that the competition should not be within the same race, but with the opponent.

In an interview with A2CNN, Alimehmeti said that instead of there being a competition of ideas, there was an internal competition.

Alimehmeti said that he is in favor of the majoritarian system, because with this system there will be more and more weak voices in parliament, there will be a weak parliament.

"The biggest problem with the system is that the competition should not be between each other but with the opponent. This is not just an electoral system. Instead of a competition of ideas, it was transformed into an internal competition."

A system that should be abolished produces a weak parliament because it distances the parliamentarian from the citizen. My mentality, I am for majoritarianism, what we had 20 years ago was a race. This is not called a race. Otherwise we would have a national proportional system.

We will have increasingly weaker voices in parliament. We come to this point where parliament rejects constitutional decisions. The problem is where we are going, the answer people give us is that election after election the voters are fewer and fewer. The connection between them and the deputy no longer has a deputy, they ask who is the deputy of the area. They want the majoritarian.

"Democracy is representation for the people. We need to talk seriously about systems that work for the people, not for the political bosses. The two main political forces, the DP-SP, have agreed and like everything, it has a backlash. But in 2021, Rama made unilateral changes."

Asked if the DP's safe list will leave to make way for him, Alimehmeti replied that he is not there to beg for mandates. He emphasized that he only seeks support from the people.

"The law is the law, even though I am against this law and I opposed it last summer and it is unfavorable to the opposition, it must be implemented. The open list was the only option and I am only asking the people for the mandate."

"I'm not here to ask for mandates from the closed list, just to be clear. But if one of them does, the law requires the removal of the list, the law must be implemented even when you don't like it. I'm just asking for support from the people, I believe in democracy from below," said Alimehmeti./ CNA
