After a period of more than 2 months of interruption, the ship with immigrants has departed from Italy towards Shëngjin as part of the agreement between Albania and Italy.

The Italian Navy patrol boat "Cassiopeia" has departed from the waters near Lampedusa and is expected to arrive in Shëngjin on the morning of January 27.

No further details are known about the number of emigrants who will come to Shëngjin, but all measures have been taken to successfully carry out this operation, which is the third of its kind.

Since the beginning of January, the number of personnel at the Shëngjin reception center and the Gjadri camp has increased and everything is ready to continue the mission in accordance with the rules established between Albania and Italy for migrants.

The Italian government was repeatedly banned by the courts from bringing migrants to Shëngjin and Gjadra. It entered into a battle with the judiciary over the list of countries of origin of asylum seekers, with the Italian government claiming that there should not be a unified list for all EU countries.

On December 30, 2024, the Court of Cassation in Italy ruled in favor of Giorgia Meloni and her cabinet, who claim that each state should have a personalized list of safe and unsafe countries.

Among other things, regarding the list of safe countries, the Court of Cassation said that the judges of each case do not replace the assessment, which is generally the sole responsibility of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and other Ministers./ CNA
