The head of the Republican Party, Fatmir Mediu, reacted to the European Parliament's report on Russian and Chinese influence in the Western Balkans region.

Mediu supports the report and requests that the Parliament of Albania have a special commitment regarding this issue.

It cites cyber and economic security as a concern of our country and outlines the steps Parliament should take to reduce exposure to threats.

According to him, Albania should adopt laws like in the USA for the assessment and control of foreign investments that are considered a security risk.

The report of the European Parliament on the attacks on the ctictic infrastructure, the disinformation, the negative influence in the region by China and Russia, require a special attention and commitment of the Assembly in the exercise of its constitutional responsibilities.

Cyber ??attacks in Albania, interventions in the economy, situations in the region or developments in Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and North Macedonia.

Economic security is not simply a matter of the amount of investments, but also the source of these investments.

The first step in reducing our exposure to these threats is the passage of laws by parliament, as is the case in the EU and the US:

CFIUS leaves the US Congress (Senate) with authority to evaluate and control foreign investments that are considered a security risk.

A joint parliamentary political engagement in this process with the support of the US and the EU is now an obligation.

Security is an issue that must be assessed by the Parliament in the service of the national interest and our role as a NATO member country./ CNA.al
