Threatening language and attacks on the media / IPI "slaps" Rama and

The International Press Institute today expressed concern about the increase in credible attacks and defamation against independent media in Albania by Prime Minister Edi Rama and arrested mayor Erion Veliaj.

IPI calls on Rama and Veliaj to refrain from unfounded pressures on the country's professional media and to support journalists who face online defamation and harassment campaigns for their work.

“IPI today expresses concern about the recent increase in verbal attacks and defamation against independent media in Albania by leading politicians, including Prime Minister Edi Rama and the arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj. We call on public officials to refrain from such unfounded pressure on the country’s professional media, including outlets like BIRN Albania, and to support those journalists who face online defamation and harassment campaigns for their work. We also stand with the Safe Journalists Network and those fighting to support media freedom within the Balkan country,” the IPI statement said./ CNA
