Fatmir Merkoçi, the candidate of the Democratic Party's primaries for the municipality of Tirana, has shown why he chose to compete.

In a statement for CNA.al, Merkoçi said that he became part of the primaries race, as he felt an obligation to represent the democrats who had nominated him.

“E ndjeva për detyrim sepse dega 9, anëtarët e degës 9 më propozuan për të qenë pjesë e kësaj gare dhe duke parë vlerësimin e tyre se nuk jam as banor i asaj lagje, i atij komuniteti, por duke parë këtë i besova dhe i respektova deri në maksimum për t’i nderuar. Ishte një detyrim edhe moral, edhe partiak, por më tepër unë di që nuk e ndjeja veten për të kandiduar, por nuk doja kësaj radhe të kandidoja, por gjithsesi, ky ishte motivi kryesor që unë u futa në këtë garë. Pastaj vazhdimi i garës është pjesë e imja”, u shpreh ai.

Merkoçi deklaroi se fitoren përballë Erion Veliajt nuk e diskuton, pasi pretendon se e djathta e ka të sigurt bashkinë e Tiranës.

"One of the reasons for running, or accepting this candidacy, was precisely that I do not discuss the victory against Erion Veliaj, I have stated this in every meeting I have been to. I do not discuss the victory against Erion Veliaj, I discuss the primaries within the party. So, I discuss whether the democrats will be able to understand what the primaries are, that's what it does to me, while regarding Erion Veliaj, I don't discuss anything.
