At Public Square, Ditmir Bushati discusses with Marc De Vos, founder of the "Itinera Institute", researcher, academic with extensive experience covering the European Union, globalization and the economy, and professor at Ghent University, Belgium.
Bushati and De Vos analyze the perspective of the European project in the context of profound geopolitical transformations that are affecting the European continent.
During the interview, De Vos emphasized that Europe is simultaneously facing Russian aggression in the east, economic competition from China, and strategic changes in relations with the United States. De Vos argues that these challenges will not weaken the European Union, but will push it towards a new, stronger form of integration.
According to De Vos, the European model built on the market, norms and soft power is no longer sufficient for the current reality, so Europe must build real capacities in security, defense, industry and strategic autonomy. He underlined that the continent is going through a gradual transition, where crises are producing new mechanisms of political and economic cooperation, as has historically happened in the most important phases of European integration.
In his analysis, De Vos emphasized that a stronger Europe is not against the US, but aims to be less dependent on American guarantees, while preserving the transatlantic partnership and simultaneously strengthening its own strategic capacities.
De Vos believes that although Europe may appear fragile in the short term in the face of security crises and economic tensions, its internal potential remains great and its future lies in deeper cooperation between European countries. According to him, the continent is entering a “quiet revolution”, where the foundations of a more politically and strategically powerful Europe are gradually being built. /CNA
