Balla remembers the Recak massacre: A barbaric act that forever changed the

The Minister of State for Parliamentary Relations, Taulant Balla, commemorated today the victims of the Recak massacre in Kosovo. On the morning of 26 years ago, on January 15, 1999, Serbian forces committed one of the most horrific massacres in Europe since the Second World War, killing innocent civilians, not only men, but also children, women and the elderly who had remained in the village of Recak in Shtime, about 30 kilometers from Pristina.

Their cries could be heard as far as neighboring villages.

"Serbian police and military forces killed 45 Albanian civilians. This event was also described as a massacre by the then head of the OSCE Verification Mission in Kosovo, William Walker. This barbaric act that occurred in this small village changed the history of Kosovo forever," Balla writes.

It was precisely the Recak massacre, and the denunciation by American diplomat William Walker, who went to the scene himself the next day, that rang alarm bells and showed the world the Serbian atrocities being committed in Kosovo, thus paving the way for the NATO bombing campaign.

"This is the saddest day of my life," OSCE Ambassador Walker said at the time, visiting the site of the massacre while the bodies were still there, an event he immediately defined as a "crime against humanity."/ CNA
