Today, the Assembly began the 11th legislature. In the afternoon session, the new deputies were sworn in and the Speaker of the Assembly, Niko Peleshi, was elected.

Niko Peleshi was proposed for the position of Speaker of the Parliament on September 11 by Prime Minister Edi Rama, a proposal that was signed by 64 Socialist MPs and submitted to the Parliament.


87 MPs participated in the secret ballot, 84 of them voted in favor, 3 against and no abstentions.
The MPs of the Democratic Party, just like in previous years under the leadership of Lulzim Basha, did not bring any innovations in terms of political behavior at the start of the new legislature under the leadership of Sali Berisha.

Opposition lawmakers boycotted the vote, threw the anti-government placards they were holding into the ballot box, and the entire voting process, and then accompanied Pelesh's speech by banging on the tables with their palms to create cacophony in the hall.

To understand the actions in past years, it is enough to look at 2017 and 2021, when the Democratic Party was led by Lulzim Basha.


In 2017, Gramoz Ruçi was elected as the head of the Assembly, while in 2021, Lindita Nikolla was elected.

Gramoz Ruçi had a more consensual election, being voted in with 80 votes in favor and 40 against.

The opposition, unlike in 2025 and 2021, in 2017 participated in the procedure, although some of them voted against, including the SMI.
The voting commission consisted of 3 members of the majority, 2 of the opposition.
