Yesterday, a young man, about 19-20 years old, had published an article on "Facebook" about politics, the left and the right. I wrote under the article "Long live ChatGPT!". He replied to me to go look at the profile of a senior politician from the "opposing camp", that the article was his and suggested that I read the book and the author, whom he had quoted.
My reply was to refrain from lying, because due to my profession I know the Albanian language very well, I think. There was no response from the person in question, but the other comments were a testament to it...
And in the meantime, I begin my reflection. Once upon a time, you had to read books to seem smart. Today, an internet connection, a “write me a philosophical analysis of modern democracy” situation, and a “copy paste” are enough. Within five seconds, another “analyst,” “journalist,” “philosopher,” “political scientist,” “geopolitical expert,” or “public thinker” with a “Facebook” status and an academic ego is born.
You can even ask to make the article "more poignant," more incisive, with quotes from philosophers, writers, or politicians whose names you've never even heard of, let alone read or studied.
Since OpenAI and ChatGPT, Albania has entered the strangest era: the era of the Albanian journalist and analyst people, the strangest era of knowledge, the era where people quote books they have never opened, mention philosophers whose names they can barely pronounce, and conduct political analysis on concepts they do not even understand at the level of a dictionary.
Today, you see a status with names like Friedrich Nietzsche, Fyodor Dostoyevsky or Niccolò Machiavelli and you immediately realize that the author hasn't even read the preface to their books. But no problem. ChatGPT extracts the quote, builds the analysis for them and even gives them the "intellectual" tone. They then throw it on Facebook like the hen that laid the egg of the century.
And the problem is not with the use of artificial intelligence. Personally, I am in favor of using AI, because it can be a perfect assistant to our profession, speech and thought. But when you are neither skilled, nor have any thoughts or words, AI will find you out. It shows how lazy and how little you are when you remove Artificial Intelligence.
The use of AI is not the problem. The problem is natural stupidity. Because a tool can help you write better, but it doesn't give you culture. It doesn't give you knowledge. It doesn't give you critical thinking. It doesn't teach you Albanian grammar. It doesn't teach you morphology, syntax, sentence rhythm, word weight, harmony of thought. It doesn't teach you the difference between an argument and coffee shop bills.
Today we read “articles” where the sentence begins in Vlora and ends in Kuala Lumpur. Articles where the linguistic logic of Albanian is violated. The comma has disappeared, replaced by a hyphen in the middle, and when it is used, it is incorrectly placed before the coordinating conjunction “ande”. Verbs are beaten with tenses and moods like deputies in the Albanian Parliament.
Adjectives are misused to the point where adjectives are confused with relationships. Articles where words are mechanically translated, to the point where Albanian seems like some illegal language smuggled in by Google Translate.
And the most tragic is the infantile enthusiasm of some kids who can barely write a request without errors, but claim authorship of “essays”, “analyses” and “platforms of political and philosophical writings” produced by ChatGPT or OpenAI. They see them with the self-confidence of an academic, while they do not even know the basic order of words in a sentence. They have no idea of ??coherence or linguistic cohesion. They do not know either the conjunction, nor the case, nor the meaning of a metaphor, but talk about the “epistemological deconstruction of the political narrative”.
And the reader is tempted to decipher the kilometer-long sentences, like those of Don Quixote de La Mancha: "The reason of the unreasonable that is made to my reason, weakens my reason so much that I mourn your beauty with reason!"
Unfortunately, appearing knowledgeable rather than being knowledgeable has become fashionable.
Knowledge takes time. It takes books. It takes effort. It takes sleepless nights, mistakes, edits, corrections. Whereas today all that is required is a poorly written prompt and an even worse written ego.
Unfortunately, Artificial Intelligence is not highlighting human intelligence. In many cases, it is highlighting human vanity and ignorance in using technology not to learn more, but to show off more./ CNA
