A new study launched in August 2025 and published in the weekly scientific journal "Nature", (one of the most prestigious international ones), on May 4, 2026, entitled: "Ancient DNA evidence for the history of the Albanians", ("Ancient DNA evidence for the history of the Albanians"), reveals that Albanians are the genetically purest people in Europe. But what else does this study, which is considered the most scientifically accurate, which overturns the current Balkan myths, reveal? From the entire gallery of study results, I am bringing some that I consider most valuable for the idea of ??this treatise.

Referring to the results of scientific DNA analyses, the study confirms that Albanians have been living in the same lands for 3,000 years. Unlike previous studies, this one used the IBD segment, the most accurate method of modern genetics. The IBD segment (Identical by Ancestry) has produced the strongest scientific result to date for the origin of Albanians. According to IBD, Albanians are the most genetically homogeneous people in Europe, with 3,000 years of uninterrupted continuity in their lands. The IBD method used by the study's scientists also accurately measures racial mixing. Experts in the field explain that IBD is "mathematical proof" of descent, it is not a linguistic or archaeological theory, but living DNA evidence.

To conclude the genetic study, scientists analyzed thousands of DNA samples from Albania, Kosovo and the diaspora. To study the genesis of populations through DNA, scientists used the “23andMe” and “AncestryDNA” databases. The IBD method searches the genome for “long identical segments” that are inherited only from a common ancestor.

Scientists involved in the new study note that the longer the identical segment, the closer the family connection. According to the study: for the period 500-1500 years ago, every two Albanians share an average of 600 common ancestors. By comparison, third cousins ??share 53 cM, while Albanians share hundreds of cM between them.

No other people in Europe have a DNA level as high as Albanians, reports a new scientific study on genetic purity and antiquity, which further informs: Albanians are direct descendants of the inhabitants of the Balkan lands. They have been in today's lands since 1000 BC.

The Albanians of the Early Middle Ages, 800-900 AD, are genetically identical to those of today. Among Albanians, the influence of medieval Slavic migrations is 10-20%, much lower than among Serbs, Bulgarians, and Greeks. 80-90% of the Albanian genome is native, Western Balkan. The result of scientific DNA analysis confirms that Albanians are among the genetically oldest populations of the European continent.

The scientific study shows that Albanians preserved their genetic core even during the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman conquests. The genetic map shows that the ancestors of today's Albanians were a small population, isolated in the mountains. In the last 1000 years, the population of "mountain" Albanians grew rapidly and remained largely unmixed. This lack of mixing with other races explains why two random Albanians are genetically like fourth or fifth cousins. While their neighbors have more widespread IBD and high admixture, Albanians emerge as a genetic island in the Balkans. Even the Arbëresh of Italy have IBD that directly connects them to the Albania of 500 years ago, announces the scientific study on the antiquity and purity of races, assessed by scientists as historic, as it puts an end to the debate about the origin and antiquity of the peoples of the Balkans.

The latest study on the origin of the races of the Balkan peoples refutes the existence of myths to date, assess the analysts of the data extracted from DNA-IBD, mentioning the collapse of three myths: the population of the peninsula with arrivals from the Caucasus, the massive mixing of populations and the Albanians being inhabitants of a "new nation".

The results of the new scientific study, about the antiquity and origin of the constituent races of the Balkan populations, are an exciting value for our national identity. They make us feel good about our thousand-year-old Balkan roots, and not only that, but they also shame us. Why, for what? For the fact of state-forming incapacity. That, even after over 3000 years of uninterrupted existence in the same lands of ours, we have still not managed to create a consolidated nation.
