Kosovo deserves and demands political accountability

From 2025, Kosovo is heading to three elections, an excessive luxury for Europe's newest state.

The repetition of general elections almost every six months can also be read as an "expression of a healthy democratic rhythm".

The truth is that, among the elections held since 2021, only two of them have been within the normal electoral timeframe. The others, unfortunately, seem to have been for electoral calculations.

The repetition can also be read as fragmentation of the political scene, lack of compromise and extreme polarization. Consequently, Kosovo, at least since 2025, is in a political and institutional crisis and lack of political stability.

Regardless of how the motives of this electoral "fisculture" can be read, ultimately, Kosovo's political class is showing that, instead of calculating the major solutions that need to be adapted within the framework of the geopolitical fluidity that the world and Europe are going through, it calculates small party interests; instead of taking care of creating political stability and, hence, institutional stability, economic, financial and military stability, it takes care of the stability of individuals.

Kosovo deserves and demands political accountability

So, for two years, instead of Kosovo's political class managing the state, carrying out reforms so necessary for economic and social progress, it has in fact been administering elections. Beyond the fatigue of voters, it is enough to recall that millions and millions of euros are spent on each election - a heavy economic and financial cost, when we remember that Kosovo has not even completed 20 years of independent statehood.

The Western allies, who invested together with the people of Kosovo to make Kosovo happen, invested even more in its security and finances to make it grow, therefore they have reason to expect a healthy trend of governance, not a sick trend of dividing up positions. The political class of Kosovo, with an incomprehensible irresponsibility, is giving them reason to be surprised, and even to be wary of further investment.

This lack of stability in Kosovo becomes even more worrying when Albanian actors in North Macedonia are also de-factored like never before, while Albania is experiencing a deep crisis of political confidence./ CNA
