Italian icon Sophia Loren, 89, is recovering after a successful operation after collapsing at her Swiss villa.

Loren suffered several fractures to her hip and a severe fracture to her femur after falling in the bathroom.

Her agent Andrea Giusti said the operation "went very well and now we just have to wait".

The actress and icon, who celebrated her 89th birthday last week, was set to inaugurate her fourth eponymous restaurant in the southern Italian city of Bari on Tuesday.

Sophia Loren restaurants announced that Loren will not be able to participate in the opening of the restaurant in Bari as he must rest after the operation.

Loren was the first foreign-language actor to win an Oscar, for the 1961 film All Women.

She has also won five Golden Globes and even a Grammy.
