A storm of rocks "as deadly as Hiroshima" was accidentally released by NASA during tests to alter the trajectory of an asteroid, scientists have discovered, writes The Telegraph.
Last September, the agency landed a spacecraft on the asteroid Dimorphos in the first planetary defense experiment aimed at finding ways to protect humanity from an extinction-level event.
Now astronomers have discovered that although the impact managed to knock out Dimorphos, it also scattered 37 rocks, which are currently hurtling through space at 13,000 mph.
Experts said deflection strategies could have the unintended consequence of leaving smaller rocks on impact with Earth. /CNA
