A scientific expedition to the depths of the ocean near Caribbean islands has discovered underwater mountains, a giant "blue spot" and many rare sea creatures that have never been seen before.
The expedition took place around the Cayman Islands, Anguilla and Turks and Caicos, where scientists used cameras and special equipment to study the seabed up to 6,000 meters deep.
Scientists recorded many unusual things, including an underwater mountain range that rises from about 2,500 m deep to just 20 meters below the sea surface.
Scientists believe that the depth and steep slopes of the seamounts have protected these ecosystems from ocean warming and climate change.
In total, the researchers documented about 14,000 organisms and 290 different species of marine life.
Scientists say the ocean is still very little explored. These discoveries will help protect marine biodiversity, create protected areas in the ocean, and better manage fisheries and ecosystems./ CNA
