Air-conditioned island 'forest' defies Qatar's scorching heat

In Qatar, where summer temperatures often force people to stay indoors, a new project is changing the way people experience the outdoors. On Gewan Island, near the capital Doha, visitors can stroll comfortably even in the heat thanks to an air-conditioned "forest."

It is about the “Crystal Walk”, a 450-meter-long promenade, covered with tree-shaped structures covered in crystals, which create shade and help maintain fresh air distributed by fans placed under the floor. The temperature is kept constant at around 21–23°C throughout the year.

In addition to the coolness, the area also offers artistic elements, illuminated crystal panels on the floor with motifs from the desert, the sea, snow and urban life. The project has also won Guinness records as the largest outdoor air-conditioned shopping center and the largest interactive illuminated roof in the world.

The island, originally built as an ancillary area for the residential project "The Pearl", has been transformed into a tourist destination with restaurants, cafes, private villas and a luxury hotel complex under construction, including the new development "Corinthia Gewan Island".

Supporters of the project believe that such developments could help extend the tourist season beyond the winter months, offering alternatives to outdoor living even during the Gulf's extreme summers./ CNA
