Japan changes royal rules/ban on female empresses remains in effect

Japan's parliament has approved a bill to ease the rules of imperial succession in an effort to address concerns over the shrinking royal family. The change marks the biggest overhaul of the imperial system since 1949, but the law still bars women from ascending to the throne.

The key changes allow the imperial family to adopt distant male relatives, over the age of 15, from the 11 former imperial branches that were abolished after World War II. Female members of the family will also be able to retain their royal status even if they marry outside the family, unlike previous rules that required them to give up their titles and leave the family.

Despite these changes, Princess Aiko, the current emperor's only child, remains ineligible to inherit the throne. Currently, the line of succession consists of the emperor's brother, Prince Fumihito, followed by his son, Prince Hisahito, and the emperor's 90-year-old uncle. If Prince Hisahito does not have a male child, the official line of succession risks ending.

The changes come at a time of intense public debate over the role of women in the monarchy. While conservative political leaders, including Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, support rules that only allow men to ascend the throne for the sake of legitimacy, polls show broad popular support for a female empress. According to a recent poll by Kyodo News, about 83% of respondents are in favor of allowing women to ascend the throne. The bill will undergo final legal procedures before it officially comes into effect./ CNA
