Study: Women today carry small amounts of Neanderthal DNA

Humans today carry a small amount of Neanderthal DNA in their genomes, but this DNA is much less on the X chromosome than on other chromosomes.

When the researchers compared human DNA with that of Neanderthals, they found more traces of human DNA on the Neanderthal X chromosomes, a pattern consistent with a scenario where Neanderthal males frequently interacted with human females.

This does not indicate the reasons why these interactions occurred, but it does indicate a trend in these human-Neanderthal interactions.

Researchers do not know for sure why these patterns of interactions occurred, whether it was due to social preferences, community structures, historical circumstances or biological factors, and whether these interactions were voluntary or other types. /CNA
