Dyeing Easter eggs/ A special tradition with a symbolic meaning

Dyeing Easter eggs is one of the most unique traditions followed around the world. This tradition has ancient origins and symbolic meaning.

THE MEANING OF THE TRADITION OF DYEING EGGS

The egg symbolizes life, which is closed and dormant within its shell, which comes to light when it breaks. The red color of eggs symbolizes sacrifice and in this case symbolizes the sacrifice of Christ, a symbol of victory, joy and life. Thus, the egg shell symbolizes the tomb of Christ, which was opened and gave life.

There is also a Church legend about the red egg: When Mary Magdalene, after the resurrection of Christ, went to Pilate to inform him of the event and brought him a basket of white eggs as a gift, according to the custom of that time, he said to her: As much as the eggs you brought can turn red, so much can Christ be resurrected. And surprisingly, the eggs immediately turned red.

ON MAINTAINED THURSDAY we paint some of the Easter eggs red.

We paint an egg for each family member and a few close people, as well as one for the house, which we keep inside the house for 1 year, until the next Easter.

On MAD SATURDAY - we dye red Easter eggs again. We dye as many as we want, i.e. we dye for our family's consumption and we also dye to give to others.

INGREDIENTS needed:

  * Food coloring for eggs (found in the church)

  * 25-30 eggs (can be made even less, if desired)

  * 6 cups lukewarm water

  * 1 and a half cups of good quality black vinegar

  * A napkin coated with sunflower/olive oil (optional)
