Kurum closes the Steel plant in Elbasan after allegations of 800 tons of toxic

500 workers of the steel plant and the processing plant in Elbasan have been notified of the unilateral termination of the contract without official reasons for the suspension. It is learned that the Turkish firm Kurum has closed its activity with the claim that it is in the process of repair.

As of August 1, the steel plant has stopped working, and from August 20 the processing plant will also be closed.

It is not yet known what the exact reason for the closure is, whether it has to do with toxic waste issues or some other reason.

After closing the factories, 500 families in Elbasan will remain without income from August 20.

Until now, there has been no confirmation from the leaders of Kurum about the decision made, although it is officially said that the closure of the activity is due to the overhaul.

We recall that the company "Kurum International" is the origin of hundreds of tons of suspected hazardous waste that were exported from the port of Durrës to Thailand, spreading a global alarm, according to testimonies and documents published by BIRN.

The Turkish company "Kurum International" has been operating in the former Elbasan Metallurgical Plant since 1998 and is an important regional supplier of iron bars for construction. With hundreds of border workers, it is also an important employer for the city of Elbasan./ CNA
