"Kurum" under investigation for toxic waste / Prosecution: Smuggling

The Durrës Prosecutor's Office has expanded the investigation into the scandal of the transport of toxic waste from the port of Durrës by seizing all the documentation of the private company Kurum International, which is suspected of having produced the toxic waste and then sold it to another company that organized the transport to direction of Thailand.

The prosecution has identified the company "Sokolaj" shpk as the exporter of these wastes, which deals with the import-export of minerals, which is owned by the citizen Gjovana Sokolaj. 

The latter has proven earlier that the destination of these materials was the state of Thailand and has cooperated with the Turkish company "Kurum International", which is also the producer of these wastes.

Even though Sokolaj has shown that the amount of 200 tons that was bought from the Kurum company is iron dioxide and not toxic waste, the prosecution is expected to carry out the laboratory examination of the samples that were loaded into the container.

Investigations are underway for the charge of smuggling prohibited or restricted goods, but at this stage there are still no persons under investigation. In addition to the seizure of documentation in private companies, the prosecution has also requested data from public institutions such as the Ministry of Environment and the National Agency of Natural Resources on the practice followed for transporting containers.

It is currently known that the ships are in Singapore, but the authorities there have not accepted them. On the other hand, the Durrës prosecutor's office has requested information electronically from its counterparts in Singapore, but so far they have not received an answer./CNA
