An Albanian couple cheated an elderly person they cared for in Greece.

The Albanian worked as an assistant to the elderly woman and with the help of her husband, they obtained a notarial power of attorney and a certificate of mental health illness.

Thus, they received a total of over 500,000 euros of immovable and movable assets.

Greek media reports that the 82-year-old woman was in good health, despite having "inability to sign", dementia and other serious problems.

The fraud was discovered after the elderly woman passed away in September 2017, when the family of the 82-year-old became familiar with the will, where all the property was given to the couple from Albania.

According to the indictment, the two defendants forced the elderly woman to sign consecutive powers of attorney for the management of her bank accounts and for the sale of assets.

After the separation, they had transferred the Greek woman's apartment in the center of Thessaloniki to their name.

The Albanians denied the accusations in court and said that the elderly woman willingly left her property to them, as they had not received much payment in the last years of her life. According to them, the elderly woman had no contact with her relatives.

The Albanian couple were found guilty of fraud and sentenced to 6 years in prison, while the psychiatrist who issued the certificate was sentenced to 4 years in prison./ CNA
