The criminal group is hit/ They cheated the elderly and extorted money from them

Europol has tracked down and arrested the head of a criminal network responsible for defrauding hundreds of senior citizens.

The arrest came as a result of the cooperation of law enforcement from Germany, Poland and the United Kingdom, this organization supported by Europol .

 The suspect was arrested near London, from where he ran a network of fraudsters who mainly targeted German and Polish nationals.

During the execution of the arrest warrant issued by the Polish authorities, officers confiscated important evidence such as mobile phones in the apartment of one of the suspects. Meanwhile, the German police discovered and seized over 160,000 euros in cash, gold bars, gold coins, jewellery, phones and other electronic devices.

The organized crime network specialized in subpoenaing senior citizens throughout Germany and Poland.

They pretended to be police officers or representatives of official authorities. Victims were told that one of their relatives was responsible for a car accident or similar event resulting in the injury or death of other persons. The scam caller would then hand the phone to an associate, who would cry or scream into the phone frantically, begging the target for help.

This was intended to pressure the old man into paying money to avoid the detention of the fake relative.

The criminals would instruct the victim on the payment procedure, then send a person to collect the money at the target. To minimize exposure and avoid the risk of arrest, the criminal network recruited "naive" collaborators for this task, through online job platforms. They did not know that their activity was illegal and criminal.

During the investigations, over 70 people were arrested who participated in this fraud, while they were collecting money./ CNA.al
