The eel trafficking gang is hit/ Europol arrests 256 people

An operation led by Europol revealed the trafficking of 25 tons of glass eels, worth 13 million euros, destined for Asia.

The investigations took place from October 2022 to June this year. The operation led to the arrest of 256 people responsible for the trafficking of 25 tons of glass eels, who are nationals of China, Malaysia, France, Spain and Portugal.

8 tons of baby eels were headed from the EU to Asia, where they would be raised in fish farms and sold around the world.

Authorities seized criminal assets worth over one million euros and bank accounts containing over two million euros.

Compared to the other phases of the "Lake" operation, this phase set a new record as the most successful with the arrest of over 50% of people involved in trafficking.
