The 43-year-old Swedish politician Karoline Nordengrip is one of the unique stories of the war in Ukraine. A fat salary, an ambitious career in politics and her adoring husband…but she gave it all up to be on the frontlines fighting tooth and nail with the Russians.
The brave Swede suddenly decided to leave everything behind and take a risk, putting her life at risk every day. "I gave up everything, deciding overnight to be in the war-torn country to help the Ukrainians who are trying to exterminate the enemy," says the 43-year-old in an interview with the German newspaper Bild.
The 43-year-old politician, responsible for military affairs, was a member of the committee of the Swedish Ministry of Defense. Two days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, she packed her bags and waited for the "green" light to come with khaki.
After meeting with the Ukrainian ambassador in Stockholm, she made the big decision to put on the military uniform and fight on the side of the Ukrainians. She was particularly moved by what the Ukrainian ambassador told her about what is happening in his long-suffering country: Russians bomb hospitals and schools, open fire on civilians claiming Ukrainian territory, rape mothers in front of their children.

"I looked at myself in the mirror, saw my high heels and my impressive suit and asked myself what the hell I'm still doing here," Nordengrip told the German newspaper. “I was particularly moved by what the Ukrainian ambassador told me, and then I decided to change my life... to take off my jacket and put on a soldier's uniform. I applied to enlist in the Ukrainian army.”
From that moment, the 43-year-old Swedish woman did everything she could to reach Ukraine safely and be transferred to a military unit.
"As a member of the committee of the Swedish Ministry of Defense, I had a good job and a comfortable life," she emphasizes, adding that she is married. "I wear my wedding ring on my right hand, so I also have my husband at home waiting for me."
How the husband reacted to the dangerous decision
"My husband was working abroad when I made the decision to fight on the side of the Ukrainians, and I knew he would come home two days early to see me off. I wanted to tell them all and then leave. In the end, nothing that I had planned happened because they called me to tell me that I have to leave early. So I called my husband and said:
'Before you get home, I'm leaving. I will go to Ukraine". Then he said, knowing my character well: 'Well… I'm surprised you haven't left yet'"

The 43-year-old trained in the Swedish army
"I started as a volunteer in the Air Force at the age of 15. Then I did my training, but at the same time I worked somewhere else for a few hours. When I went to Ukraine, I passed my knowledge on to the soldiers," she says characteristically.
For the first time in her life, she is on the front lines of the war. "We were shot, we had a fight, but everything is fine, I was not hurt."

While the Russians were shelling them, the camera on her helmet recorded the operation minute by minute. In fact, she did not hesitate to upload the material on social networks, commenting ironically on the military capabilities of the Russians. "Fortunately, the Russians shoot worse than my mother," she wrote on her Instagram account.
