Ten people die in a bus crash in Australia

At least 10 people were killed and 25 others injured after a bus carrying wedding guests lost control at a roundabout in the Australian state of New South Wales, police said on Monday morning.

The accident happened around 23:30 on Sunday near the city of Greta, about 180 kilometers northwest of Sydney. The accident happened in the Hunter region, known for its vineyards and wedding venues.

"We know that they had been to a wedding together and that they were traveling together...apparently to their accommodation," Police Commissioner Tracy Chapman told a news conference.

Police are still trying to identify all the passengers, she said.

The 58-year-old bus driver, who was arrested, is expected to face charges related to the crash, Chapman said. After the incident, he was taken to the hospital for mandatory alcohol and drug testing. Although dense fog was present in the area at the time, the exact cause of the road accident, which is Australia's worst in nearly three decades, has not yet been determined, according to Chapman.

Australia experienced two of its deadliest bus accidents in 1989, both in the state of New South Wales. This accident involved two buses that collided with each other, where 55 passengers lost their lives.

Additionally, in 1973, a brake failure led to a tour bus plunging down a slope, resulting in the deaths of 18 people.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his "deepest condolences" to the families of those who lost their lives.

"We all know the joy of going to a wedding...they are some of the happiest moments you can have. For a joyous day like that, in a beautiful place, to end with such loss terrible lives and injuries is so cruel, it is so unfair", Albanese told reporters.

Residents of the area have gathered to pay their respects and place flowers near the accident site.

The wedding venue, a winery called Wandin Valley Estate, was closed on Monday.

"We are deeply saddened to hear about the bus crash during the night that took the lives of some of our guests," said the organizers./ Rel
