Amid fierce fighting, Russia aims to take over Donbass

Ukraine's military has reported heavy fighting in the east of the country as Russian forces try to take full control of the partially occupied regions of Luhansk and Donetsk.

"The adversary continues to focus its main efforts on trying to fully occupy the regions of Luhansk and Donetsk," the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said on Sunday.

The focus of Russian forces on the Luhansk and Donetsk regions continues to increase as the Ukrainian military mounts a major counteroffensive aimed at retaking Ukrainian territory occupied by Moscow.

On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that the long-awaited counteroffensive had begun.

"In Ukraine, counter-offensive and defensive actions are taking place, but I will not say in detail at what stage they are," said Zelensky.

During a press conference in Kiev with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Zelensky was asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin's claim that a counteroffensive had begun but that Ukrainian forces had made no progress.

Zelensky told reporters to convey the message to Putin that Ukrainian generals "are all in a good mood."

Zelenski said later on Saturday that the toughest battles are being fought on the eastern and southern fronts.

Floodwaters receded slightly in parts of southern Ukraine on Saturday, but in other areas water levels rose earlier in the day as rescue operations continued.

At the same time, the country's nuclear energy agency said on Saturday that the last reactor at Europe's largest nuclear power plant was put into a "cold shutdown" mode for safety reasons.

Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the regional military administration in Kherson region, said on Telegram that 35 settlements were flooded on the right bank of the Dnieper and that 3,763 houses were under water.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine announced that at least 27 people have disappeared in the flooded areas of Kherson./ Rel
