Polls have opened in the Netherlands for parliamentary elections. Opinion polls in the country suggest that the anti-immigration Party of Freedom (PVV) of Geert Wilders could win the election again.
The PVV, which finished first in the previous election and formed an all-conservative four-party coalition that lasted a year before falling apart, is leading in the polls and is projected to return between 24 and 28 MPs to the 150-seat parliament.
However, the far-right party's popularity has fallen since 2023, when it won 37 seats, and all major parties have ruled out forming a government with Wilders, who ended the outgoing coalition in June over a debate over his radical anti-refugee plans.
While the outcome is difficult to predict and coalition talks could last months, analysts say that after the most extreme government in its recent history, the next Dutch cabinet is likely to be a broad-based coalition led by the center-left or moderate right.
Voting centers, including Madurodam village in The Hague and the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, opened at 7:30 a.m. local time and will close at 9 p.m.
