Iran's new supreme leader: Successor will be a 'Khamenei'

An Iranian member of the Council of Clerics, which is responsible for choosing the new supreme leader, has announced that Khamenei's name will continue in Iran's leadership, implying that the successor will be one of his family members, most likely his son.

Hoseinali Eshkevari, a member of that structure, said in a video published by Iranian media that the vote has been cast and the election will be announced soon, but without providing further details.

Iran's Assembly of Experts, the constitutional body that elects the Supreme Leader, is said to have reached a consensus on the new candidate, although the name has not yet been officially announced. Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader's son, is widely cited as the leading candidate to take the post, although this has not been officially confirmed.

There are discussions within the assembly about the procedure and how to make the public announcement due to the security and division of opinions about the successor.

This idea indicates that the new successor will be someone who carries Khamenei's ideological line and political name, being part of the same internal elite of the Iranian political system.

This also suggests that not only the title, but also the continuity of his policies is expected to remain unchanged./CNA
