Iranian Foreign Minister: We have not yet chosen the new supreme leader

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denied claims that the Islamic regime had elected a new supreme ruler this Sunday.

Araghchi spoke about the process while speaking on the American media outlet NBC's "Meet The Press" show.

"There are many rumors around, but we have to wait for the Assembly of Experts to convene and vote on the new supreme leader," the minister declared.

Earlier in the day, Assembly of Experts member Ahmad Alamolhoda had announced that the choice had been made, adding that Hosseini Bushehri is now responsible for announcing the decision.

Early indications from the clerical body suggest that Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will become the new supreme leader, but his name has not yet been officially announced. /CNA
